With our recent disastrous posting schedule, I’m sure you all think we’re really lazy, but I promise that we’ve been ridiculously busy just lately. We still have loads of projects on the go – lots of them need finishing before the cold weather kicks in. We already can’t wait to share everything that’s been going on!
Until very recently our guest bedroom still looked like this
After a lot more work, it now looks like this
As always when choosing colours for our house, we picked up a load of swatches before narrowing down our choice and buying some testers.
Because the room is north facing, we wanted a colour that would be light and fresh, but still be dark enough to contrast with the pure brilliant white that all the woodwork is painted in.
After painting the test patches onto the wall, I immediately knew which colour I wanted – and luckily Jan agreed!
Clouded Pearl 1 just seemed a bit too dark and Chiffon White 1 was a bit too flat and grey – Clouded Pearl 3 seemed pretty much perfect. It’s dark enough to contrast nicely with the white woodwork and ceiling, but still light enough to not darken the room.
Although not planned, the colours we’ve used in the house so far all have slight grey undertones which makes them tie together really well.
The new room feels so clean and fresh, especially compared to the sticky yellow and pink walls that were there before.
We still have a fairly long list of things to complete before we can call this room complete:
- Replace window
- Replace radiator
- Attach picture rail
- Strip, sand and paint door
- Attach trim around new window
The end is in sight now. I can’t wait to tick the project off our list and to have a nice space to welcome guests.
Have you been doing any painting lately? Do you have any guest bedrooms tips for us to make the stay for our friends and family extra special?

Hi there, I came across your site last night and loving it! I’m currently working on the stairs and hall way in our victorian terraced, its taken us nearly 3 months so far! I was thinking about which paint to use and wondered whether you found the Dulux brilliant white eggshell yellows much? I have used Dulux satinwood previously, however i found that it yellows after 6 months :(

Awww, thanks! So glad that you found your way over to us, Rachel! I wouldn’t necessarily recommend the paint we used. We did have problems with the first batch of paint yellowing (on the first things we painted in the house). Apparently they’ve since changed the formula and up till now, our staircase has held up fine.
In out post “It’s stripping time” (9th January), Louise kindly recommended linseed paint. She also added a few links to some products. It sounds perfect and I wish I’d known about it before now! It definitely looks like something worth checking out, especially if you’re not keen on the paint you’ve used so far!
Hope that’s some help! Good luck with your staircase!

It’s looking good. I’ve been liking grey lately too. Color that is still bright and fresh.
In my guest room I keep a small basket of travel sized toiletries in case my guests forget anything. I used to keep a nightlight in the guest bathroom, but installed a dimmer switch which I like better.
Ive been painting in the basement. Over the weekend I painted ALL the ceilings and walls. And now I’m painting he floor and then I get to do accessories. I look forwards to the finishing steps that make is feel like home.

Thanks Cindy! I’m so impressed that you painted your whole basement in just a weekend! Have fun doing your finishing steps – you’ve definitely worked hard to enjoy your space!

It looks much more welcoming. I repainted the kitchen in August and just like you say, the room looks a lot cleaner now! I had also bought three samples before deciding on a colour.

Thanks Magali, we think it’s much more welcoming, too. Your kitchen has turned out amazing – still very jealous of your new kitchen window…
