If you’ve been following our adventures on Instagram, you’ll already know that we’ve spent the last couple of weeks working on completely renovating the first room in our new house.

Just like the rest of the house, this room needs a complete overhaul. The electrics and heating need replacing, all woodwork has to be stripped and repainted, the draughty window needs a lot of TLC and the whole room will have to be replastered.

We definitely have our work cut out but after hours upon hours of stripping old layers of wallpaper (there were 6!), removing all of the old cables and sockets and preparing new channels for our new electrical cables, we’re slowly starting to think about what we want the room to look like when the messy building work is completed.

We’d originally planned on using the room as either Jan’s or my study but, as so often, have changed our minds about 10 times and are now planning on using the room as a guest bedroom.
It’s not a huge space so our layout options are limited. There is enough room for a double bed, some kind of wardrobe and a small seating area and table. Just because the room is fairly small, doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun choosing all of the fixtures, fittings and finishes.

We’ve already made the most important decision and have chosen a gorgeous new luxury vinyl plank floor that will look amazing in the room.
Because the room has a small balcony, we wanted a floor that not only looks good but is hard-wearing and moisture resistant, too. Our new Granorte vinyl plank floor ticks all of the boxes and I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am about installing it!

We ordered it online at Bricoflor who have the most extensive range of flooring I’ve ever seen. They have everything from ridged vinyl flooring like the floor that we’ve chosen right through to laminate, tiles, carpet and engineered wood flooring.
I know that ordering your floor online may seem like a risk but it’s actually a great way to purchase your flooring as it’s delivered straight to your door and you don’t have to drag it home yourself. At Bricoflor you can also order free samples before you make your purchase so that you can be sure you have a floor you love.

We may have already decided on the lovely new floor but there are still lots of other design decisions to make.
Although I spent days stripping wallpaper, it’s not stopping me from thinking about adding some new wallpaper or a mural in here.
I absolutely love this moody bouquet noir mural which I think would look amazing in combination with the vinyl plank floor and because the floor is so light I’m convinced that the room wouldn’t be too dark even with this mural.
The alternative I’m considering is this much more subtle and calm wallpaper which I’d probably cover all of the walls with.
I love it but I’m worried that there won’t be enough contrast as the floor is light, too. As always when decorating a room, there are just so many decisions to make.
We still need to choose a bed and other furniture like bedside tables and a wardrobe but for the first time in weeks, we feel like we’re actually making progress. Now we just need a plumbing issue to be sorted so that we can finally start laying our new floor!
We’ll hopefully be installing our new floor next week so don’t forget to pop back to see the finished result – we can’t wait to share it! Apparently, laying a vinyl plank floor is easy so it should at least be one part of this room makeover that runs smoothly.
Have you ever laid a vinyl plank floor – do you have any tips for us? Which wallpaper would you choose? The dark flowery mural or the calm Scandinavian-style shapes?

Your guests would definitely enjoy staying in that room, so much that they may not want to leave! I think the noir floral mural can work so well with the light floors. I know this room is going to look perfect!

We used Max Provenza in our new home. I would NOT recommend it! Many problems and it scratches easily. It is noisy as it is a floating floor. The list of items that violate the warranty is very long. And it has a temperature range for house prior to and forever… but it is lively in appearance

Oh, that’s so annoying, Carry. The Granorte floor we’re using seems to be really high quality and has a cork backing layer which should help with soundproofing. Having said that, we’ve not used it before so it will be interesting to see how easy it really is to lay and how it holds up over time. Absolutely love the way it looks and feels, so fingers crossed that it stays that way.
