I’m so excited to share the latest addition to our home with you – our new pretty smoke alarms!
You might think I’ve gone mad getting so excited about smoke detectors but once you take a look at them you’ll know why! Can you see it?

Yep, that’s a smoke alarm!
We’re definitely safety-first kind of people but traditional smoke detectors are, let’s face it, really rather ugly. So, when I came across these pretty smoke alarms by Jalo Helsinki a while ago and instantly knew that I had to have them in our new home.

Now you can see why I’m so excited!
I know smoke detectors may not seem like the most interesting topic ever but they’re so important!
According to statistics published by Jalo Helsinki, one life is saved for every 10000 smoke detectors used. So it’s pretty clear why everyone should have them in their home!
Depending on where you live there are also rules and regulations that actually require you to have smoke alarms in your home. Here in Berlin, there are rules meaning that we have to have one in every habitable room but who wouldn’t want one if could save your life!

For us, the best part of these detectors, apart from keeping you safe of course, is that they look great! They’re available in loads of different colours to suit your decor, too. For the most part, we’ve chosen fairly neutral colours that blend into the background but they come in a wide range of other colours, too.
I love the design of both of these stylish smoke detectors. The Kupu smoke alarm, in particular, is really sleek and minimalist which was bound to appeal to me. It’s even won a Red Dot Design Award!
There aren’t any buttons or fussy bits that you’d expect from a normal smoke alarm either. It’s covered in fabric that hides all of the technology that keeps you safe.

The second smoke alarm is the Lento.

Isn’t it fun?! Like the Kupu smoke alarm, it comes in a range of different colours. I think it would be perfect for any children’s room and love how it looks in our hallway, too!
It’s definitely a talking point and everyone who’s seen it is surprised that it’s a smoke alarm. (Oh, and yes, we still need lamps… just ignore the cables for now – we are!)

The Jalo Helsinki smoke detectors were really easy to attach to our ceilings, too. They’re battery powered so there’s no need for any cabling and there are two different methods you can choose from to attach them to your ceiling – screwing and glueing.
We tried both methods and both worked well and were super easy.
1. Screwing The Smoke Detector
All necessary screws and wall plugs come with the pretty smoke detectors so all you have to do is drill two small holes into the ceiling, screw on the fixing plate and slot the pretty smoke alarm into place.

2. Glueing The Smoke Detector
If you thought that screwing the smoke detector to the wall was easy it gets even easier as the alternative method of attaching them is with 3m tape.
Simply peel and stick them in place. Literally took less than a minute to attach including climbing up our ridiculously long ladder.

All smoke alarms should be replaced after 10 years and these ones are equipped with a 10-year battery which means that you never have to change them!
Did you know that you have to clean your smoke detectors? Because dust settles on the smoke detectors it can block the system and prevent them from detecting smoke. That’s why you should give them a clean with a vacuum cleaner once a year!
Sticking with the safety theme we now also have a fire extinguisher. Can you spot it?!

Well, if you’re anything like us I can’t blame you! We always thought fire extinguishers were large, ugly and took up a lot of space until we received our new Oiva fire extinguisher!

Yep, that’s a fire extinguisher!
There’s really no excuse to not stay safe when it can look this good!

The Phoenix fire extinguisher is filled with a biodegradable extinguishant and unlike a traditional high-pressured fire extinguisher, it’s completely maintenance-free!
I’ve obviously not actually used it yet (and hopefully I’ll never have to!) but it’s good to know that it’s there in case of an emergency. Best of all, if we do use it, it’s non-poisonous so can just be cleaned away with regular household cleaning products.
If you want more information on these pretty smoke detectors or the Phoenix fire extinguisher there are loads more information on the Jalo Helsinki website!
Do you have smoke alarms in your home? Did you know that you have to clean your smoke alarm at regular intervals? Be honest – when was the last time you tested your smoke alarms?
If you like this project, you will love these ones, too!

We just bought these after seeing your post. I might be too excited about them ?

They’re amazing, aren’t they! Everyone comments on ours and wants to know where we got them.

We looked at purchasing these, but as our house (in the UK) is over three floors they don’t comply to building regulations, which state that all alarms should be hard wired and interlinked, they also suggest heat detectors in kitchen areas – hopefully Jalo will
Increase their product range soon as none of the better looking alarms seem to comply to these regs. They do look very sexy though!
Christine says
Building regs change drastically when there’s a third floor – it’s one of the reasons we put off converting our loft for such a long time (I just couldn’t bring myself to rip out the original doors)!

Sometimes when we cook we get smoke and our alarm goes off. Is it easy to turn it off?
Christine says
It’s super easy – there’s no fiddly button, you just push the whole thing!

Gorgeous smoke alarms but don’t forget a carbon dioxide alarm and a fire blanket in the kitchen!
Thanks for the tip about cleaning smoke alarms, never thought of it.
Christine says
They’re great, aren’t they?!
We don’t actually need a carbon monoxide alarm in our home as we don’t have anything that could produce it here. We had two in our last house though!
