How To Paint A Front Doorstep

As you know, over here at the Little House On The Corner, we’re constantly up to our eyeballs in projects.

It’s exciting to see changes and progress happening (we can’t wait to share the huge project we’ve been working on later this week), a large amount of the jobs on our to-do list are much smaller and less exciting.

Painting our front doorstep is one of those small jobs we’ve been putting off.

Front Door Step

Originally the step had been covered with a sheet of stainless steel, which covered the join between the laminate flooring in the hallway and the doorstep.

Now that we’ve removed the laminate flooring and sanded the floor, the step is a bit higher than the hallway floorboards.

Lucky for us, it’s an easy problem to solve, as there is a thick layer of mortar under the stainless steel.

After just a few minutes of chiselling, we managed to remove the already loose mortar.

Front Door Step

After making sure the area is dirt and dust-free, we painted the step with black doorstep paint.

When we eventually get a new porch, we’ll have to rethink the doorstep situation, as we’d like the floor of the new porch to be at the same level as the floor of the hallway. But for now, it’s definitely an improvement, even if it’s completely uneven.

Front Door Step

Pop back later, when we’ll be revealing what the huge project is that we’ve been working on!

Thanks Magali! Our’s is such a mess, too! We had someone round to give us a price for a new one and he said it was the worst built porch he’d ever seen!

hmmm….. I’ve been wondering how to spruce up my doorstep after having an antique French door installed. I love the door but it makes the surround look a wee bit shabby! I think I’ll add doorstep paint to my hardware shopping list. thanks for the idea

Glad we could help! Every time we update something in our house, it makes you notice the things that aren’t finished even more! It’s so annoying sometimes ;-). Our step is still really uneven, but at least it’s a much cleaner finish.

That looks great! I looooooove that doormat — big laugh here. You guys are working so fast! (I know it may not feel that way to you, but it looks that way from the outside.)

Thanks Stacey, but you’re right. It feels like we’re moving in slow motion! The doormat was from Ikea, our friends say that it sets the tone. ;-)
