We have been busy. In between the DIY projects that we have been sharing with you, we have been secretly planning something huge – we are planning to convert our loft into an extra bedroom and bathroom.
Although we don’t really need the space (we already have 4 bedrooms, one of which we use as an office), we would like an extra bathroom and more storage. Our roof also needs an overhaul, so that it really only makes sense to tackle a loft conversion at the same time – that’s our excuse anyway.
This is what we are planning to do.
I hope that this makes some sense, but here goes.
The staircase leading up to the new bedroom will be directly over the existing staircase that leads up to the first floor. This is roughly what it will look like.
Let’s hope that it will be less wonky than my drawing!
To give us some more head height in the loft, we are planning to have a dormer installed to the rear of the house, where we will have a small en-suite bathroom and… wait for it… walk-in wardrobe! I can’t wait.
The en-suite bathroom will have a walk-in shower as well as a wash basin. As the bathroom is more or less open to the bedroom, we will have the toilet in a separate room with a door… it would just be weird otherwise.
The walk-in wardrobe isn’t huge, but will hopefully provide enough space for our clothes that need to be hung up. On the opposite side, we will have some shelves where we will store our shoes. In addition to the walk-in wardrobe, we plan having built-in storage along the eaves in the bedroom. That’s where we will store the clothes that can be folded.
There are still loads of things to sort before we can actually start any building work, but hopefully we will be able to begin with the initial works of the loft conversion around the middle of September.
We haven’t chosen any materials yet, but are thinking about having a wooden floor in the bedroom and dressing room and maybe a dark tiled floor in the bathroom. Any ideas or suggestions are more than welcome!

Try Fakro roof windows as opposed to Velux, great quality and big range.

Thanks for the tip, Louise! We’ll keep an eye out for them.
