Happy New Year! Hope you’re all recovering well from last nights’ festivities! We spend a fun evening with some lovely new friends here in Berlin!
I have no idea where the last year disappeared to! I know that it’s something that most people say around this time of year but it feels more real than ever before. I honestly can’t get over the fact that we’ve already been here in Berlin, for over a year! After such a life-changing move, I guess everything is really put into perspective and you have less of a sliding scale of achievements but rather a full on hard break where you know exactly what you’ve managed to achieve (or not) in exactly what time.
I’m hoping that 2018 will be at least as eventful as 2017. We have so many things we’d like to do, see, update, change and experience that it sometimes feels like I will explode!
So, in a (probably feeble) attempt to stay on track and actually stick to our plans for a change we’re sharing them here for all to see.
1. Kitchen Makeover
We have a couple of really big projects planned this year and our kitchen makeover is the one I’m looking most forward to!
We shared our plans and mood board a couple of weeks ago and we’ve just started some of the prep work which essentially means that our kitchen is now looking worse than ever before because there are doors and handles lying around everywhere! We’re sharing loads of updates over on Instagram stories if you fancy a peek at the chaos!
2. Knock Through Door Between Bedroom & Dressing Room
At the moment there’s no connecting door between our walk-in wardrobe and our bedroom. I hate it because it means that we have to walk around the bedroom and through the hallway to be able to get to our clothes. First world problems, right?
Yes, it’s not the worst thing in the world – especially given that we’re lucky to even have a room that’s a walk-in wardrobe but a door leading from the bedroom directly to the room we use to store all of our clothes would make so much sense.
The wall between the rooms isn’t structural so it should hopefully be an easy and straightforward job to do.
3. Overhaul Guest Bathroom
I hate hate hate our guest bathroom. It’s small, cold and damp.
It doesn’t look too bad in the pictures but in reality, it’s a really miserable space that we never use.
In the summer months it wasn’t too bad but, as there’s no heating or warm water in there, it’s really not a nice space to be in during winter and because of this, we’ve decided that we’d like to install underfloor heating.
This inevitably changes our mood board plans slightly but we think that the additional work will make the room be much more usable.
4. Update Living Room
Considering this is the room we spend the most time in we’ve really been ignoring it. Sanding and oiling the floor definitely made a massive difference but other than sticking our furniture in it, we’ve not done anything else to the room.
The plan is to paint the walls a dark colour (maybe something like Railings by Farrow & Ball or Basalt by Little Greene) but I keep changing my mind.
Either way, this room is going to get painted this year! Doing something about the bare bulb hanging from the ceiling would probably be a good idea, too!
5. Panel Guest Bedroom
If you caught one of our stories over on Instagram, you might already have seen that we’ve started to plan the panelling. I’ve worked out exactly what it should look like and how to do it but we can’t start the project until a few updates have been made to our electrics.
We had planned on doing all of the work in here over the Christmas break so it’s super annoying that we’ve been set back again because of dodgy tradespeople.
Fingers crossed that we find a new electrician soon!
6. Start Airbnbing!
A couple of months ago we shared the huge news that we’ll be opening up our home and inviting people to stay. Ideally, we would love to already be hosting guests but we’ve still not finished the bedroom makeover.
This is mainly down to the electrician situation mentioned above and the fact that our curtain quote came in over 2000€! There are also a few more updates that we’d like to carry out before we feel that the room is good enough for guests. I know that I’m being super fussy but it’s really important to us that people staying with us have the best experience possible.
7. Living Room Lighting
I’ve seen a chandelier that I love (it’s this Multiarm chandelier by Rewire) but at almost 10k it’s safe to say that it’s just a tad out of budget!
I recently also discovered this absolutely amazing lamp by Lindsay Adelman.
With our super high ceilings I think it would work perfectly in the living room and best of all it’s in budget! Well, kind of…
It would be normally something I could only dream of but there are much more affordable kits available to make your own! To say that I’m excited would be a bit of an understatement!
8. Update Electrics
Admittedly updating our electrics isn’t overly exciting but it has to be done. We painted the sockets and switches in our bedroom which worked amazingly well but in the long term we would like to replace all of them throughout the apartment with some lovely period style round ones.
Given our current track record with electricians, we’d also like to get as much of the electrical work out of the way as possible so that we don’t end up in another situation where we can’t get a project completed because we’re waiting for a few sockets to be moved.
Along with updating things in the guest bedroom, we’d also like to move and add sockets in the living room which will allow us to rejig the layout of the room and finally get painting in there, too. I can’t wait!
9. Front Door Makeover
We picked up some of the supplies for our front door at the weekend so hopefully, we’ll be able to share an update, soon!
At the moment the front door is boarded up which is why none of the original period moulding and detail is visible. Although it’s not pretty, we have decided to leave it! We’ll be sharing all of the reasoning behind our seemingly mad decision but don’t worry, we have an update planned that will (hopefully) make it look amazing, too!
10. Dressing Room Makeover
To go with the new doorway straight through to our walk-in wardrobe/dressing room we’d love to build some bespoke built-in storage. At the moment we have a few freestanding clothes rails and a long shelf along the wall which just about enough storage but, let’s face it, you can never have enough!
We’re planning on building floor to ceiling cupboards along the whole wall which should give us more storage than we could ever hope for! We’re still working out the details but, as always, we’ll share all details here soon!
I probably don’t say it enough but we’re so grateful for your support, especially over the last year. If I’m completely honest, I’m still not sure that the fact we now live in Berlin has sunk in. Moving from Manchester halfway across Europe has by no means been easy and there are more than just a few difficulties that come with such a life-changing decision.
We’re sure, more than ever, that this was the right thing to do for us but that doesn’t mean that it hasn’t come with its challenges.
Thank you so much for your comments, advice and help – it really does mean a lot to us and is what motivates to keep sharing our home improvement adventures!
What do you have planned in 2018? Are you planning any home updates or makeovers? What’s the number one thing you’d like to achieve in the next year? Are there any skills you’d like to learn?
