With over two years of DIY experience we’re practically professionals. Okay, maybe not, but one thing we do now have is a decent selection of tools. Here are our top 10 favorite, must have tools that we just couldn’t live without.
1. Heat gun
When our heat gun broke the other week, we almost didn’t know what to do with ourselves. We were lost without it. At the moment, it’s one of our most used tools and luckily it was still under warranty, so we now have a brand-spanking new one. This one is really good, as it has a dial where you can adjust the heat output. It also comes with loads of different nozzles, a scraper and a nifty carry case to keep everything together.
2. Cordless Drill
If there is one power tool we can’t live without it has to be our cordless drill. Almost every hole in this house has been drilled with this handy power tool. Over time we have also built up a decent selection of drill and driver bits to go with it.
3. Spirit Level
Indispensable, unless you don’t mind your pictures being wonky or your shelves slanting.
4. Tape Measure
The longer the better. We have one that’s 5m long, which is plenty for most things. I actually always carry it around with my in my handbag. So, for all you guys out there who are wondering what women have in their handbags there you go – a tape measure.
We love this ladder. It’s so versatile. You can use it as a normal ladder or as a kind of mini scaffolding by attaching the platform. It’s made painting cornices and trim that are higher up so much easier.
Invest in the best brushes you can afford. It’s really important to keep them clean and well maintained. They should last for years and years if you take care of them. We use these Purdy ones for all our painting (except when we use a roller). We also have some really cheap ones, which we use to apply paint stripper, plaster boding agent or other things that would damage the brushes.
7. Utility Knife
We use our utility knife for so many things from cutting the vinyl tiles in our bathroom, scoring wallpaper or cutting insulation and drywall boards. The list is endless.
8. Selection Of Screw Drivers
Make sure you have a selection of Phillips head and flat head screwdrivers.
A hammer is pretty much self explanatory. Not much DIY can be done without one of these.
10. Vacuum Cleaner
This is our current vacuum cleaner. It’s not meant for vacuuming any building debris, so we are careful to sweep away any rubble before using it. It’s really powerful and doesn’t have any bags or filters that need renewing – it just has a clear container that collects the dirt and dust, so you can see when it needs to be emptied.
This is only a selection of our DIY tools. Of course we have loads of other things like sandpaper, various different kinds of tapes, saws, chisels, caulk… the list is endless. What are your must have DIY essentials? Is there a tool you just can’t live without?
