The Runner Up

  • Facebook
  • Twitter

Yesterday we told you about our staircase restoration progress. There are a few things that still need finishing off, but we’re really happy with the result so far.

Edwardian Staircase

As we’re so close to finishing the project, we decided that it’s about time to start looking at carpet samples for the runner that we plan to have on the stairs and landing.

We’ve narrowed the choice down to 5, but are really struggling to decide between them. We plan to paint the hallway white, so don’t have to worry about clashing colours.

This first one is called Respect. We like the brown colours that go well with the treads and red stripe adds just a bit of colour that brighten things up.

Stair Runner Respect

This one is called Mississippi. We love the bright fun colour, but aren’t too sure about the pink and blue stripes in it. It’s also very expensive.

Stair Runner

The third one is the lightest carpet. It still has some fun colours in it, but in general the tones are much more muted and not as vibrant.

Stair Runner

The fourth carpet is called Rainbow. The purple stripes in it go really well with the colour of treads as the brown has a slight purple glow to it.

Stair Runner

This final one is called Roxanne. It’s definitely the most vibrant and colourful carpet. We’re not sure if it may be a bit too colourful though.

Stair Runner Roxanne

We’re really struggling to decide and could really do with your help. Which carpet would you choose? Let us know what you think!

Just found your website and must say it’s fab. We have just bought a wreck of a 1930’s semi and are very excited but it’s very daunting.
Options one and four at my favourite. We too would like a runner but at the top of the stairs it turns right and left (right is an extension) so I can’t see the stripes working sadly.

Thank you so much & congratulations on your new home, Carley! Since writing that post, we have actually had a runner installed (you can see it here). Because we waited so long to decide on which runner to go for, some actually weren’t available anymore! Ups.
When looking for runners, we did see some runners up stairs like you discribed. It’s probably worth getting a few catalogues and brochures to see your options.
      Good luck with your renovations!

Thank you so much! The other two are the ones I absolutely love. We’re in the same area (North West England) so if you can give the name of the shop I can do the leg work myself to save your time if you like. Thanks again, Amy x

    Hi Guys

I’ve been looking for carpet runners online and just cannot find any anywhere that are remotely as nice as these. Where did you find these please? If you don’t mind sharing. Not trying to copy your house honest :)

    Thanks

Aww, we’re flattered Amy! Always happy to share…
Respect and Roxanne are from the Rock N’ Roll series by Alternative Flooring. Mississippi is by Crucial Trading. I honestly can’t remember who makes the other two, but if you’re desperate to know, I’ll pop back to the carpet shop…
      Hope that’s some help!

Go for a sisal that is similar to the light fixture in color. You will tire of the busy stripes.

We decided to go for stripes because we think that it should be easier to maintain and not show up marks as much! We’ve also decided to keep the rest of the hallway fairly neutral so that the striped carpet should be the only thing that’s busy. Sisal sounds like a great option, too! Ohh…. there’s just too much choice!

I like Mississippi, but would try a strip of all the samples and see how each looks w/ the rest of the house.

Hi Mary Ann! At the moment the plan is to paint the hallway white, so we are pretty flexible with the choice of carpet. It’s a good tip to see what the carpets look like in the other rooms though! We’ll definitely check to see if there are any major clashed before we make a final decisions!

    Hi Guys!!!!!

My pick would be Respect. It does blend in perfectly with the color of the rail.
It also has, in my opinion, a rich, classiness about it that the other two doesn’t
    have.

I look forward to see the one you pick and the finishing results!!

    Rainbow.

Very dramatic and striking. It creates a strong, elegant presence to the foyer. It has a nice contrast of dark and light colors. It works with the dark treads and light risers beautifully. Also, it would play well with future decorating/color changes in the foyer.

I like #2 the best, but if it’s not worth the extra cost, I like #3.
I suggest you also stand at the top of the landing looking down and see what goes with the stained glass door the best.
Maybe show us that view, too?
I found you through the challenge and read your entire blog in two days.
You’re doing a fantastic job and you were well worth the eye-strain!

So excited! I will try and take some better pictures of the most popular carpet samples so that you can see more of the colours and detail. It’s almost impossible to capture the exact colours. Looks like Rainbow is still the front runner!

My vote is for Rainbow. It makes the brown and white of the stairs really pop while holding it’s own with a fresh splash of colour. It fits in and stands out at the same time. :)

I like the 3rd one best… although it’s lighter I think it has strong colors that can be pulled out and it doesn’t take away from the stairs either.

2nd choice for me is #4… I love the purple (looks blue in the pic) stripe and think it adds a touch, but the colors overall are darker and tend to be matchy with the treads….

I would recommend looking at your colors around the house… if you use brighter colors then go with the brighter runner… the colors are great but very bright… and then is an expense that will be with you a while…. or it would be for me. LOL :) Best of luck – M
