In a house like ours that need so much work, it’s rare that we can tackle one job without ending up having to do a string of other things. Removing the wall between the kitchen and the dining room is definitely one of those projects that involve what feels like a million other ones that then need sorting. But that’s not the only one…
Remember this little ongoing project?
It’s weeks ago that we last gave you an update on our guest bedroom progress. While recent progress has been slow, we have already tackled a huge amount of projects like preparing the walls, stripping and painting the skirting and most importantly sanding the floor.
But now it’s all go again! Our latest little project is having the electrics sorted – and it’s well overdue! Our pendant ceiling light is in a rather bizarre position right in front of the window.
The sockets are weird wall mounted boxes that are chipped and mounted in such an awkward position that the cable gets squashed against the skirting.
Well, it’s all sorted! This is what it looks like now (with a sneaky preview of our new little bedside table).
Our lovely electrician, Dave, did an amazing job (the room is actually cleaner than before) and we now have some great new sockets and a light that’s in the centre of the room!
We love the new stainless steel and screwless cover plates. They are so sleek and minimal.
But that’s not all that’s happened. At the same time as having the bedroom sorted, we also had the electrics in the dining room sorted. There was a lot more to do in there – more on that soon!
We’d better get a move on finishing the room, as we have guests coming to stay soon! At least a deadline should help us with the final push. Do you also work better under pressure?

A great site with loads of inspiration. The reason the light fitting was in a strange position though, is so that when you’re in the room, the light is between you and the window, so there’s no chance of a silhouette of someone getting undressed (or worse), so it’s actually an original feature!

Thanks for commenting! We were aware of the reasons for the light placement – it’s still a bit weird though! Didn’t Edwardians have curtains? ;)
It’s the same as the doors that open into the room in order to give the people a few seconds to prepare themselves before guests enter.
As much as I love an original feature, this one definitely had to go!

VERY nice. I’ve never seen the screw-less version of those in the US and I love the fact that you can switch the outlet -a much more elegant solution than unplugging your device charger to save electricity (which I never do even though we have ads on TV telling us that we should!) -Caitlin

Thanks Caitlin, I love them, too. I think the sockets with switches are quite unique to the UK. They are really handy, but take some getting used to at the beginning – we kept forgetting to turn on the switches when we first moved over!

Oh I am SO with you on this! We also have those bulky and battered sockets and can’t wait for shiny new slimline ones. It’s these little things that modernise a room I think. Hope your guests appreciate all the hard work! :)

I’m a complete freak when it comes to screwless finishes. I completely agree, for me it’s the little things that sometimes make the biggest difference.

Small jobs can sometimes make an amazing difference! I need deadlines to finish things. I just finish painting the kitchen the day one of my friend came for a week visit. It was still smelling of fresh paint when she arrived!

Sooo glad we’re not the only ones! In Blogland sometimes things seem a little too perfect. We’d been manically trying to finish our guest bedroom before our guests arrived – we finished (more or less) about an hour before they actually turned up! There are still a few things to finish off, but we’re almost there – can’t wait to share.
