What a year it’s been!
Politics went mad, we sold our house and moved to a different country, we bought a new home in Berlin (you can take the full tour here) and we got engaged (didn’t see that one coming, did you?)!
Yep, you could say that for us 2016 was rather eventful. Now we’re looking ahead to the new year which for us will be full of changes again!
In March we get the keys to our new home and already can wait. I’m getting a bit over excited, to say the least, and find myself spending way too much time browsing the internet and flicking through magazines looking for interior inspiration. My shopping wishlist is already long enough to reach from here back to Manchester and we’re really excited about being able to get stuck into messy DIY projects again.
So much has changed for us in the past year and it really does feel like we’re making a fresh start. There are a lot of things we’d like to achieve in 2017 including a lot of home improvement goals but for us the coming year is also about adjusting to our new life in Berlin, finding focus, making long-term decisions and taking a more mindful approach.
These Are Our Top 5 Goals For 2017
After the first few years of renovating our home, we realised how important it was to be able to take a step back and have some time for ourselves.
A couple of years ago our resolution was to take a break and start travelling more. And we did. We visited Cambodia, Dubai, Las Vegas, Hamburg, Vietnam, Barbados and next year we’re off to South Africa.
Having just bought a new home we won’t be able to do any more travelling for a while but we will still try to make time for ourselves and have occasional DIY breaks.
Moving twice in the space of a few months, living in an apartment that we knew was only temporary and living in a new city are all things that have left me a bit on edge. The last months have definitely been tough and I honestly felt like I’d lost my mojo. It was almost like being stuck in a bubble and real life just couldn’t continue.
Now though we’re looking ahead to a new home and a new life. We’re super excited to be moving into our new apartment, tackling DIY projects, making new friends, joining a gym and basically having a ‘normal’ life again.
Although we’ve been here in Berlin since the middle of September it feels like we’ve not actually seen much. Yes, we’ve seen some of the big sights and have eaten way too much delicious food but Berlin is a huge city with so much to discover and we’ve only barely scratched the surface! I can’t wait to see everything!
Ohh, DIY – how we’ve missed you! When we first started out on our home improvement journey over 6 years ago, we wanted everything completed and out of the way as soon as possible. I almost can’t believe that we now miss it!
It’s so rewarding (in more ways than just financially) and although it wasn’t all fun, the sense of achievement when completing a project is always worth the hard work.
We can’t wait to get stuck into improving our new home. We learned a huge amount from improving our Edwardian house and there are a few things we’ll be doing differently this time around. We’ll be sharing the plans for our new apartment soon, so stay tuned!
We’re super fortunate. We have each other, we’re able to move into our dream home, we’re healthy and we live in a country where we feel safe. We really appreciate how lucky we are and we would love to do something to give back and help others. We already have a few ideas, at the moment I’m not sure exactly what we’ll be doing.
What was your highlight of 2016? Do you have big plans for 2017? Do you have any goals you’re trying to achieve?
