We experienced and learned a lot during the 6 years that we restored our Edwardian house. The biggest three lessons we learned during renovating our home is that it’s really important to take breaks and get away every now and then, it’s imperative to complete at least one room renovation to have a place to retreat to and most importantly you need to be able to get a good night’s sleep.
Having a calm and peaceful bedroom and somewhere to recharge is so important. There are a lot of things that can help create a relaxing space. Curtains – ideally with blackout fabric, calm colours and soft lighting but the most important thing is a comfortable bed.
A new bed frame has been on our wish list for longer than I can even remember. We bought ours from Ikea when we first moved in together as a cheap and temporary solution. Five moves and 10 years later we still have our temporary solution but the one thing we didn’t skimp on was our mattress and slatted bed base. It was definitely an investment and it’s one that we’ve never regretted.
Our mattress has now seen better days (did you know that you’re meant to replace a mattress every 5 – 10 years?!) but it is still really comfortable and to go with our comfortable bed we now have some super comfortable new pillows!
Jan has always preferred a firm pillow and if I’m completely honest I’ve always been more of a squidgy down pillow kind of girl which is why I’d not expected to love our new Eve pillows as much as I do.
Initially, my thoughts were – how excited can you get about a pillow? Well, it turns out a lot! I’d heard rave reviews about memory foam before but I’m still surprised at just how good it is. It’s soft and firm at the same time and really moulds itself to the shape of your head and neck.
I’m admittedly a bit of a clean and neat freak so I also love that they have a removable and washable cover. If you think of what your pillow has to go through it really only makes sense to be able to wash it!
The only slight negative (you know we like to nitpick when we review something) is that the pillows had a bit of artificial, packaging like smell when they first arrived. I aired them on the balcony for about a day and it already reduced the smell significantly so I assume that it’s just a matter of time until it wears off completely.
Eve has a try before you buy policy which means that you can test their pillows for 30 days and if you don’t like them you can get your money back. Basically, you have nothing to lose!
Our current temporary bedroom may still not be the prettiest or most relaxing of retreats but as you can tell we love our new Eve pillows and even if the room isn’t the most glamorous of spaces we can at least sleep well!
What helps you sleep well? Have you ever tried a memory foam mattress or pillows?

Sleep spray is a great way to make your bedroom feel more sleepy. This works do a good one but I make my own using a blend of Chamomile, Vetiver and Lavender all suspended in perfumers alcohol. makes a great Xmas present too.

Ohh, that’s great to know Maaike! A new mattress has jumped to the top of our wishlist (but maybe not till after we’ve moved… again).
