At the moment, it seems like every weekend is planned around our staircase restoration. It’s slowly starting to drive us mad!
We spent this weekend with yet more sanding. It just seems to be never ending.
We are of course making some progress and, compared to what it used to look like, is already a huge improvement.
This weekend we even got round to replacing the two missing spindles.
It feels like there’s not too much more to do, but we’ve been thinking that for weeks (if not months) and I’m not sure how much more sanding my poor fingers can put up with. They’ve probably been sanded almost as much as the stairs itself!
Now that everything has been sanded (again) we can start painting everything (again).
We are so desperate for this project to be finished and the DIY duel has definitely given us the push we needed. While I’m sure that taking part in the duel was meant to be fun and a bit of competition has never harmed anyone, I think I might scream if I have to sand anything ever again!
Check out how the competition is doing!
Hopefully it won’t take us too much longer to complete the staircase! But you know what it’s like, everything always takes much longer than expected!

You’re making great progress, which is the whole point. Keep it up! Can’t wait to see more. Love that newel post cap too.

Hi Sarah! Thanks, but it seems like progress is very slow and the works never ending! But I’m sure you know what that’s like yourself!

It’s already looking much better without any missing spindles (on the plus side, I learnt a new word!)… I have no spindles at all on the second part of my staircase! But that will be a later project!

Thanks! It’s surprising what a difference small things, like replacing the spindles (apparently also known as balusters?!) can make. At least you won’t have to strip any spindles if you don’t have any! ;-)
