Having lived in some very small apartments in the past (and that’s not even including our tiny student accommodation) you almost automatically learn to be more creative with the little space you have.
Luckily we now have a much larger house, but a few old space saving and storage habits still creep in every now and then.
If you don’t have much storage space, we find that putting the prettier things somewhere on show works well. It really helps you keep the precious cupboard space free for things you want to hide. Alternatively you can hide things in pretty storage boxes, like this antique box that we use to store our kindling and firelighters for our open fireplace in the living room.
We bought it a while ago at a local antique market. By complete coincidence it just happens to fit below our shelves in the dining room.
You’ve probably already seen our storage solution for herbs and spices. You can read more about it here.
It still works really well for us. Everything is on show, but it’s all contained neatly on the wall. If you only have a small space, the most important thing is probably to be as tidy and organized as possible.
Something that always works well for us is using hooks on the back of doors.
It’s a great place to store towels and bathrobes.
Our best solution for hiding “stuff” has to be these cubes.
We have a project planned with them for later in the year, but until then they are dotted around the house and come in very handy as extra seating. If you are wondering what they have to do with storage, take a look at this:
As you can see, they are hollow. The cube shown is the one in the living room which we use for storing magazines. We also have some in the hallway which we use to hide things like umbrellas, gloves and hats.
Let’s face it, you can never have enough storage! Do you have any clever storage solutions? We’re always on the lookout for clever ideas!
