Do you ever take on one project and then realise that in order to complete it, about a million other little projects need completing?
Our little – knocking down a major load-bearing wall between the kitchen and dining room – project falls exactly into that category.
We’ve already tackled a load of little projects that arose because of knocking away the wall, as well as some larger (and slightly unexpected) ones like sanding the floor in the kitchen.
One of the last things in need of sorting is the hole behind our kitchen units where the wall used to be.
Well, we couldn’t leave it like that, could we?! Always ones for a quick and easy solution, we decided to just have an MDF board cut to size and screw it to the backs of the units. It all seemed simple enough, except that the board didn’t quite fit.
On the plus side, it was an excuse for us to get out one of our power tools. And after a quick trim, sand and screw, it fitted perfectly.
By now, I’m sure you’ve all guessed that we didn’t just leave it like that…well, of course not! We’ve painted it with blackboard paint.
Having done a bit of research, we found out that it’s best to prime your chalkboard before drawing your design onto it, otherwise your very first drawing could end up rather more permanent that you’d probably want.
And here’s our first little, quick design.
Do you have a blackboard in your home? Do you have any suggestions for our next chalkboard drawing?
Ahhh you’re so arty! Such a great transformation over something so simple! :) x
Thanks! It’s surprising how 10 minutes work can sometimes make such a difference.

How did you guys patch the floor?
Basically we ripped up some floorboards out of the back bedroom and nailed them into the hole. Because we knew we wanted to sand the floorboards, we figured that this way the colours of the sanded floor would match. We tackled it when we sanded our kitchen floor – you can read more about it here.
That was a great idea and I had already noticed you were talented with letters, but these ones are really lovely!
Awww, you’re too kind, Magali!

Holy cow, did you freehand that?? Cool!
Aww, thanks. Yes, it’s freehand, but chalkboard is very forgiving! If it looks wrong, you can just start again…

Love the chalk board. I don’t have one myself, but something I did when I worked 9-5 in a call centre many years ago was hijack the drywipe board behind my desk ! You might like this idea! On Bonfire night morning I drew the foundations for a good bonfire, twigs & stuff. As the day went along I added to it, then as people walked passed & spotted what I’d done they added to the ‘bonfire’ during the day. A supervisor spotted it & I thought I might be in bother, but she sauntered over & drew a battered old settee on the top. Someone else drew a Guy, & firework exposions got added near the end of the day. Kept us amused for hours!! Halloween & Christmas are also really good for drawing things that you can build on over a few days. Have fun :o)
Thanks Wendy! I LOVE the idea of a drawing that people add to! I almost want a party, just so I can get people to draw something on the board now! There are probably endless possibilities – knowing our friends, I’m not sure how much of it we’d be able to share here though… pretty sure a lot of it would be classed as x-rated! ;)
