If there was one thing that’s been on our very long to-do list since the day we moved in (over 4 years ago now!), it’s been – Remove the boiler out of the fourth bedroom!
I mean, seriously, why would anyone fit a boiler in a bedroom when you have a perfectly good cellar?
The initial motivation to get it moved soon wore, especially when the first quotes came in to get it done. It turns out that getting a boiler moved is a really expensive thing to have done. In the end, we just filled the room with a load of junk (where does all the stuff keep coming from) and ignored it – until now!
It’s gone and as if nothing ever happened. Yes, that might be a slight exaggeration, but it’s definitely looking much better and once we’ve plastered the room you’ll never even know it was there.
This is an enormous tick off our list of projects for this room. Yes, it’s a pain to spend a lot of money on something that isn’t you’re essentially hiding and that isn’t going to make much difference to the way you live, but we really couldn’t leave it in the bedroom, could we?
This is what our cellar now looks like.
Isn’t it pretty? Okay, so pretty may be stretching it a bit, but overall it’s so much tidier and better fitted than it was before. We’ve also already had a few extra connections fitted so that we have the option of attaching a water cylinder when we convert the loft and we’ve had a new radiator fitted, too.
But the best is yet to come, we have a super fancy new thermostat, too!
The thermostat (it’s the WarmUp 4iE smart thermostat in case you’re wondering) is wired to the boiler and should not only help us stay nice and warm, but also help us to save some money, too. It learns your heating habits and automatically suggests ways for you to save energy. We love that you can control it through your smartphone, tablet or computer, which is great for people like us who tend to forget to switch off the heating when we’re away for a few days.
It’s easy to use and fun to play around with. As expected, it gives you a load of information on how warm your house is and how much energy you’re using, but it also gives you weather and traffic infos. Best of all, it looks good, too!
Up till now everything is working really well, but if there is one thing that could be improved upon, it’s that there currently isn’t a dedicated app for the thermostat. You have to log into your account and control it from there – or of course on the thermostat directly. It’s not really a big deal and I had a chat with the super helpful customer service who said that they were currently working on one and expect it to be released in the coming months.
We’re so happy that the boiler has finally been moved and we can’t wait to see how well our new thermostat works. We will of course give you an update later in the year to see if it really is helping us to save energy. Let’s just say that we have high expectations!
Where do you have your boiler? Are we the only people that used to have it in a bedroom? Do you have a thermostat that helps you save money?

Hi Guys,
Really interested in the Warmup 4IE for my property but can’t find many reviews online – hows it worked for you so far?
Thanks in advance :-)

It’s worked great for us so far Adam. It keeps the house at a more even temerature (it seems to recognize when it has to start heating in order to keep the temperature, rather than waiting till it’s already dropped) and we’ve had no problems so far. Being picky, the screen could probably be a bit better (it’s not bad though) and I don’t think that the smartphone app is out yet. We will be sharing a review later in the year. At the moment we are happy, but it’s hard to say how well it is actually doing, because we only had the heating on for a few weeks after it was installed. I guess we’ll know more in a few months!

Hallelujah on moving that boiler. Worth every penny if you ask me. Now you have an additional beautiful room. There would just be no way to ever camo that thing. Good move on the radiator in the basement too. Now your work and storage space will be dry and warm. :)

Thanks Caitlin! Even if we’d managed to cleverly hide the boiler in the bedroom, it would have still meant that there’s a big corner of the very small room taken up and honestly, I wouldn’t really want anyone sleeping in there with the boiler on! I know it’s save and we’ve had it checked a few times, but it still seemed wrong!
Not sure our cellar will ever be warm, but dry would already be a huge bonus!

I swear, every time I see one of your new posts I go “yes! I understand” HUGE congratulations on moving your boiler, I have no idea why it would be in a bedroom but can also understand it probably wasn’t high on your list of priorities too since it does cost so much. What a difference it will make to that bedroom.
Our boiler is in the main bathroom on the 1st floor which is a more sensible place but that doesn’t stop me from wanting it moved to the ground floor as and when we do the extension. We want to turn our existing kitchen into a utility room so it would make sense (in my mind anyway) to put the boiler in there, in turn freeing up space in the bathroom to put a separate shower in there rather than just one over the bath. My other half is not so keen when I mention all these things so I’ll show him this post.
Love the thermostat too! X

Haha, thanks Lins! We were working on the bedroom all weekend and not having the boiler in the corner makes it feel twice the size! I think having the boiler in your “new” utility room would make perfect sense, too! Whilst it was a pain to have it moved, at least it was a job where we didn’t actually have to do anything (except of course pay at the end).
The new thermostat is working really well and our house temperature feels much more balanced without extreme periods of hot and cold.
