They seem to be everywhere at the moment – painted baskets. Not ones to miss out on the latest craze, we decided to attempt one, too.
We picked up this fella called Knarra at Ikea for £6. We bought it with a specific purpose in mind and will be sharing our little project with you next week, so stay tuned.
We really like the basket as it is, but always like to try to personalise things, so painting it seemed a good idea.
I used some masking tape to section off the area that we want to paint. We still had some chalk paint lying around from when we painted our living room tables (you can read about the project here) so decided to use that.
Because of the large weave of the basket I could have probably painted it without the masking tape, but I still decided to use it as it just makes life that bit easier and would allow me to paint quicker without having to be too careful.
Being impatient as usual, I only applied one coat of paint. I really couldn’t be bothered to wait for it to dry to paint it again and luckily it covered so well that there was no need for a second one anyway.
Here’s the result.
As the basket is so light, I hasn’t sure painting it white would be enough of a contrast, but I’m really happy with how it turned out.
I love the way such a quick and easy update can turn a standard item into something more personal. There are a few small areas where the paint leaked through to the inside of the basket, but they are very small and the chalk paint is very easy to sand away.
What do you think of our updated painted basket? Do you also like to personalise things? Have you ever painted a basket?
