Having been using our fourth bedroom as a dumping ground for the last few years, sorting it had never really seemed much of a priority, especially when we had the rest of the house to sort, too. But when it started raining in through the ceiling, we knew that it was time to get things sorted asap!

Over the last few months, we’ve been busy replacing and updating it and now that most of the dirty building work has been completed we can start to think about adding some of the finishing touches to the room.

Up till now the only furniture in the room are the bed and our newly refreshed sideboard. We’d still like to add some shelving, a nightstand, a rug, some art, curtains,… you get the idea, but thanks to Homebase we have managed to tick one thing off our long list and now have a lovely new ceiling light.

It’s weird how sometimes the small changes and improvements can make the biggest difference and having a nice ceiling lamp – ours is the aerial metal pendant light in yellow – is one of those improvements. It really adds a fun splash of colour to the room which, as we haven’t added art or personal touches yet, is currently is still just rather green.
Part of the reason for choosing this lamp is that it comes with a ceiling rose and cable, which means that we can remove the whole super yucky light fitting that’s been there since we moved in.
Attaching the lamp was really easy and only took about 15 minutes to do. First, we removed the old fitting (after turning off the electricity of course), then screwed the new back plate to the ceiling.

Then it was just a matter of connecting the cables to the new lamp, screwing the new ceiling rose to the backplate and adding a bulb before turning the electricity back on and enjoying our new lamp!
We’ve also finally ordered our new sockets and light switch for the room. Currently we only have an ugly old plastic light switch and, since having our electrics sorted last year, no working sockets at all in the room (the cables are there, but there are no sockets yet)! Now that we have a pretty new lamp, it was definitely time to have a pretty switch to turn it on with!

This room has come such a long way in the last few months. If you’d like to catch up on our efforts to get the room to this stage, here are the boxes we’ve ticked so far.
- Strip wallpaper – done.
- Move boiler – done.
- Replace lintel – done.
- Replace window – done.
- Add architrave around the new window
- Repair ceiling – done.
- Plaster walls & ceiling – done.
- Repair floor – done.
- Strip & paint (or replace) skirting boards – done. (In the end, we decided to replace them)
- Strip & paint doorframe
- Lay new floor – done.
- Paint walls – done.
- 2nd Fix electrics
- Furnish & add finishing touches – underway.
We’re almost there now and it’s just a matter of giving ourselves a push to get the last few jobs finished – including boxing in the ugly steel over the window.
Do you have a favourite lamp in your home? We love to tick boxes and get things done but are often guilty of not quite finishing projects. Are you the same? What’s your worst DIY related habit?
