You’ve already seen lots of our arty things around the house. Although our home may seem very colourful on some of our photos, most rooms are actually fairly neutral. We like to add colour through accessories and art which can easily be changed and don’t involve having to repaint a whole room.
If you’ve not already guessed, we love colourful artwork. It brightens up any space. Lots of the art is special to us. Some pictures have been drawn/made by us, some are items we brought back from our holidays other items are gifts.
We love this large silk batik in our dining room.
We bought it while on holiday in Malaysia. It’s amazingly colourful and every time we see it, it reminds us of the fantastic time we had there.
Bizarrely we first saw it right at the beginning of our 3 week round trip, but it was quite expensive and we couldn’t make up our minds. After thinking about it for the whole holiday, we eventually went back to the local artist and luckily it was still available. Well, almost – it had a sold sticker on it, but we managed to persuade him to sell it to us anyway!
Another piece of art from Malaysia is this sewn wall art with the image of a chit-chat. It was a Christmas gift of my Aunt and Uncle. We love it because it reminds us of the fantastic holiday we had with them – and of the noisy chit-chats that were everywhere!
This Germany screen print was a birthday present of my parents.
If you look more closely, you can see that it’s made up of the names of German cities.
These etchings are on the upstairs hallway. I made them a long, long time ago.
One of the images is some sort of mythical creature and the other is of a foot. Don’t ask why I bothered to etch a foot, I really have no idea what I was thinking.
The painted picture over our dining room fireplace was painted for us by my uncle.
It’s oil on canvas and shown part of Manchester city centre.
In addition to a few more arty things we also have lots of photos of friends and family dotted around the house.
It’s nice to have personal items that remind us of special people, events or holidays. It’s also great to have a mixture of art that we’ve made ourselves and art that we’ve bought or been given.
While out and about at the weekend, I discovered an amazing artist who makes fantastic paper sculptures one of which I’d love for our living room. I’m still working on Jan, so hopefully we’ll be able to show you something very cool, very soon!
