When we told you about our staircase restoration progress at the beginning of the week (you can read about it here), we hinted that we had another staircase related project planned.
Well, if you hadn’t already guessed, we are planning to install some panelling along the staircase wall. This is what it should look like.
The light grey shows the existing dado rail and the existing skirting board with the panelling in between. We think that the panelling will make the wall look more finished as well as adding some interest. The plan is to paint everything with the same white eggshell paint that we are currently using on the rest of staircase, which will hopefully be more durable than a standard emulsion paint finish.
The existing dado rail and wall are both in a very poor condition and will require a lot of attention first.
We have more or less finished stripping the paint off the dado rail and we told you about removing the dirty and torn wallpaper here. Annoyingly the plaster under the wallpaper is cracked and broken all along the wall, so we will have to skim the whole area before we can even think about attaching the staircase paneling.
Attaching the panelling should hopefully be fairly straight forward. After all, how hard can it be? Let’s hope that for once it actually is an easy job!
Do you think installing staircase paneling is a good idea? Or should we just stick to what we have and keep the area between the dado rail and skirting board plain?
