I love autumn; it’s my favourite time of the year. The leaves on the trees turn multi-coloured, coming in from the cold and sitting in front of a roaring fire with a glass of wine, it’s my birthday (not that I necessarily like to be reminded of my age) and best of all, it’s Halloween. So, welcome to our first ever Halloween Mantel. Not too bad for a first attempt, is it?
I printed the witch themed book dust covers onto packing paper for a more used feel.
*Update: Thanks to a few unexpected and very kind requests, we’ve created a free downloadable template of our Halloween book covers. You can check out our little tutorial and download the files here.*
The bats flying up the mirror are just cut out of black cardboard. I folded them along the center and wings to give a slight three-dimensional effect.
For a splash of colour we added the two pumpkins and for the larger one, I made a glittery spider decoration.
We already owned the spider web candle sticks on each side of the mantel. I made the “blood” dripping down the white candles by dripping red wax down them. It only took about 5 minutes for all the candles and we think it’s quite effective.
Last but not least, we added some cobwebs which we stretched across the mirror and fireplace.
The glittery spider webs are inspired by this amazing tutorial I saw at Centsational Girl. Instead of using wax paper, I used transparent foil and wood glue. When the glue and glitter mixture is dry, you can just pull it off the foil and no extra cutting out is necessary. (Yep, you can call me lazy).

I love the mantle, but think a few more cobwebs would be a nice touch. Where can I find book covers like the ones you used? Thank you!
Christine says
Thanks Katy! I think you’re right about the cobwebs, we’ll definitely add some more this year. I made the book covers myself. It was just a quick design that I printed onto some packing paper. I’ll make a downloadable for this Halloween for you (probably won’t be till late September though).
